At the June 2019 Biannual Meeting, the LWV of Illinois approved the study to update our current Criminal Justice Position. Proposed updates with Pro and Con positions are now being reviewed by the LWV Leagues of Illinois including the LWV of McHenry County.
Our league is now reviewing the information provided by the Criminal Justice Update Committee. In January 2021, the McHenry County League will meet to come to consensus on each of the 14 position changes provided. Our consensus decisions will be submitted to the Update Committee. With all the League submittals to the Update Committee provided, the results will be presented at the 2021 Biannual LWV Illinois convention for approval.
The proposed consensus questions that address the totality of the system through 14 sections are:
- Impoverished communities
- Gender issues
- The need for data collection and transparency
- Criminal justice coordinating councils
- Pretrial procedures
- Restorative justice
- Emerging adults
- Courtroom procedures and access
- Sentencing laws and procedures
- Incarceration and Mandatory Supervised Release
- Post-incarceration and successful reentry
